What we've learned....

This week has been exciting and fantastic! We had Halloween on Monday and on Tuesday we had a day off school for Cup Day! Today Marianna's mum came in and we worked in pairs or threes and we made string out of plastic bags. This week in maths we made our names out of grid paper and we had our last of 4 activity maths sessions. We even managed to squeeze in a bit of gardening!

Here are some of the things we really enjoyed about this week:

I really liked the jewellery that Mariana's mum made out of plastic. Gareth

I really enjoyed when Jared's face got covered with icing sugar! Lulu 

I really liked when we planted the leftover sunflower seeds in the wheelbarrow. Sunita


I loved the 1/2 activity maths. I was in Jared's class and we weighed different things. Nina

 It turns out that vertical maths isn't as easy as it sounds. Ilya

When Marianna's mum came we were learning about making plastic string. My favourite part was spinning the string around with the stick at the bottom so it would all come together. Olivia

I liked working in Betty's grade because there were puzzles. I played against Jaden in connect four. Jaden won. Ella

I liked having my lunch order today. I had a sausage roll and a chocolate milk. Max H.

I liked the way lots of people helped me sort the juice boxes at lunch so that we could put them into the recycling bin and not the rubbish bin. Lauren (teacher)

I enjoyed lying in my bed on Monday, having a carrot and watching a bit of telly while I was sick. Felix

I enjoyed  the dressing up day on Monday. Teagan

I enjoyed playing soccer today and winning two/one. Sam

I liked dressing up on Halloween, I dressed up as a witch. Mia

I picked up rubbish in the shelter shed today. Aidan

While I was away I went to Byron Bay and I went to the beach everyday. Josh (the poet)

On the holidays I went to Wilsons Prom and we took photos of all the rubbish we found. Clarrie

I liked playing Star Wars at lunchtime with Olivia, Riley, Marianna, Edward and Kayla. Romy

I enjoyed playing with my friends Grace and Alex and we worked out our problems together. Evie

Halloween Horrors!!

Today was October 31st, which is Halloween! We came to school wearing spoooooky costumes. We were dressed as all sorts of different things.... witches, cats, zombies, wolves, vampires and mummies. The first thing we did was a game.... you had to pick up jellybeans from a sheet covered in icing sugar without using your hands. We got icing sugar all over our faces, even the teachers. Jared came up with half his face with icing sugar and Martin got his arm covered. It was hilarious!!

We also learnt about the Mexican Day of the Dead, we saw a slide show of how to get ready for a Dias de los Muertos celebration and we did some very careful colouring of sugar skulls. Then, we played more games in the afternoon with the other 1/2 classes. There were silly balloon relays and we learnt how to make groups with people we've never worked with before. It was super duper spooky fun!!

Jam Slice Spectacular!!

On Friday we made JAM SLICE!! It was super fun to make and totally delicious to eat!! It only had four ingredients, how easy is that!? We were very lucky to have the help of lots of lovely parent helpers. We worked in four groups and made half a tray of slice each group. We used Ella's Lemon and Ginger Marmalade to make the slice and we topped it off with lemon icing as white as a frosty morning. When it was cooked it was softer than shortbread, crumbly and crummy and scrumdidleumptious! When we tasted it we were as proud as flying dogs, as proud as chickens who had just laid eggs, as proud as grown gorillas! Here is the recipe in case you want to make it at home.

Jam slice  

(this recipe makes a half tray, you will need to double it for a whole tray)

Ingredients 

 115 grams of butter

1 ½ tablespoons of jam

1 ½ cups of self raising flour

½ cup of sugar

Method

·    Preheat the oven to 180 degrees.

·    Grease a slice tray or line it with baking paper.

·    Melt the butter and jam in the microwave until it’s soft.

·    Sift the flour and sugar into a bowl. Then stir in the butter and jam.

·    Pour the mixture into the baking tray.
    Bake it for 25 minutes. Ice it with lemon icing! Yum!

All about AREA!!!

This week, we looked at AREA in maths. Area is a type of measurement. You can measure the top of a lunchbox* or a tabletop*. You can measure the area of the smartboard* (interactive whiteboard*) and the area of the floor.

We used informal units (the in means not, so informal means not proper) of measurement to measure the area of things around the room. Some of our informal measurements were...A4 sheets of paper, A3 paper, newspaper*, hands and feet.

We measured out beach towels (for our toys and pets) using informal measurements. They were all different, they had different areas. We painted our towels with lovely designs using watercolour* paints.

Today we had a measurement challenge. We had to make bookmarks* that had an area of 48 square centimetres (formal unit of measurement). Then we had to colour them in following the instructions on the board.

We learned that you can use square counters as a model to work out how many squares across and down. Max H

I learnt that it’s good to use different measurements for different things. Mia

We learnt that you measure area in square centimeters, square meters, square kilometers and square millimeters. Ilya and Sam

I learnt making a bookmark* is fun and using square centimeters for measuring is easier than you think. Josh

I made a bone shaped bookmark. It looked a bit strange but it was 48 cm2! Max R
