The Superhero and the Strawberry Princess: Part 1

Here in 1/2B, we love writing! This week we watched a music video for Coldplay's song, Strawberry Swing. Rylee, the prep teacher told us about it and we watched it on the interactive whiteboard. It is a chalk-mation and it is wonderful.

After we'd watched it we sat down and did some lightning writing about it. Then, today, we all sat down together and began writing the story of the Superhero and the Strawberry Princess. We weren't going to post it til it was finished but we're really excited so we thought we'd share what we've got so far.

The Superhero and the Strawberry Princess

It was another beautiful sunrise. The sleepy man lay in bed. “Ahhhhhh,” he yawned. The sky was pink and orange and yellow like fireworks. It looked like it was going to be a lovely day. He trotted downstairs in his slippers and sat at the table to eat a hearty, healthy breakfast of whole fish which he wolfed down in one gulp. Yum! *

All of a sudden he heard a shriek. “ HELP!” He grabbed his trusty super-telescope and spied a strawberry princess, in desperate trouble. She was tied up on a pencil, in a teacup which was filling with water. She was going to drown! The man’s pyjamas burst off him and underneath .....duh da da duh...he was a super hero in a rainbow coloured superhero suit!

The superhero flew out the window to save the strawberry princess. He flew up to the atmosphere, up where the air is clear, to get a better view. She was trapped in the Taj Mahal by the giant evil squirrel who wanted her to be his bride. * Now that our brave hero knew where she was, he swept down through the clouds, back to earth, his larva-coloured cape streaming behind him. As he did so, he was halted in his tracks. The evil squirrel appeared from behind a cloud, with a huge arrow gun.

Shewww, sheeeew, sheew!  The arrows zoomed and zipped past his ears but luckily, just in time, he dodged them all. Shewww, sheeeew, sheew! The arrows kept firing, the gun was unstoppable! The hero whipped out his rainbow coloured, unbreakable umbrella which shielded him from the swarm of deadly arrows. The evil, giant squirrel was fed up so he snatched up his giant scissors and snipped the hero’s cape like it was paper.

Down, down, down fell the superhero, down through the clouds, down through the mist, down through the dark and gloomy squares of the city windows. Little kids looked through the windows with amazement. Our quick thinking hero flipped his umbrella and parachuted gently down until, SPLASH! He plunged into the ocean. His umbrella became a little boat. He sat there, lonely and wet, wondering what to do next.

Suddenly... a giant, evil lion catfish swam sneakily up behind him and snapped him up whole with one giant gulp.

Diggers!!!

Today is Thursday. Today there are diggers right outside our window. It is very very noisy. The digger's big scoop reminds me of dinosaurs. A dump truck comes to pick up the dirt. With the digger there is an excavator. Gareth

Today a team of diggers came to our school to start a hole. They put a fence around the area to keep us safe. A semi trailer brought the excavator to remove the earth. It was very very LOUD!! Another tip truck came along to take away all the dirt from the hole. The school will have a new portable classroom soon.

Place Value

Over the last week, we have been learning about place value in maths. Place value tells you what the different digits in a number are worth. We are still getting the hang of it but we've been practicing using some great games. We played "Race to 50" and "Race to 100" to help us learn about groups of 10 and ones. To play them you roll a die (6 sided) and cover up each number as you roll. The first person to the end is the winner! We used counters to play race to 50 and MAB or buttons to play race to 100.

Here is what we've learnt:

Place value is the hundreds column, tens column and the ones column. Ilya

Today we played a game called race to 100! Gareth

Place value is about columns and how much the numbers in each column are worth. Romola

For example, in the number 345 the 3 is worth three hundred. Lucy

For example, in the number 74 the 4 is worth 4. Mia

For example, in the number 691 the 9 is worth 90, it is 9 groups of 10. Clarrie

I learnt that 294 and 29 are different because one of them has a hundreds column. Felix

We love wet days!

During the wet weather we've been having a wonderful time. We've had wet lunch hours inside and we've played all sorts of lovely games together. The other day, when the music started for the end of lunch, we packed up straight away. Mrs Elsbury, the teacher on duty was SO impressed she gave our whole class plus ones! Here is some of the fun stuff we were doing:

On Tuesday I and my pal, Evie, made a school girl picture out of dominoes. She was wearing a blue dress, blue hair-clips and blue shoes. She had yellow skin, black eyes and a red smile and orange hair. Olivia

On Tuesday, Sunita and Isabel and of course, me, Lulu, played dogs and lions. Sunita was the lion and Isabel was a sausage dog. Me, Lulu, well, I was a whippet. Then it started to rain so Rod called us in for a meeting. Isabel and Sunita and me pretended it was an animal meeting. When Rod had finished we did wet day timetable and we built Sunita a kennel.  Lulu

Today we made dominoes and Yoda is a good guy. He likes to fight bad guys today.  Aidan

My name is Gareth. I am in Lauren’s class. At lunchtime I got to go into Betty’s class. There is my best  friend Hamza in Betty’s class. Betty’s class is easy to get to because it is just next door. Me and Isaac made a comic and it was fun. Gareth

Today 5 boys (Sam, Ilya, Felix, Josh and Clarrie) in the class made a domino Yoda. We were uncertain if it would turn out very good but it turned out really good. Sam

On Tuesday I wrote a book. It is not finished but it is going to be awesome! I am doing well. But all the same, it is impossible that it will be out in the Library. Romola

On the 7th of June we made a domino Yoda. It was raining, it was a really awesome Yoda. It was fun. Felix

Today 5 boys in the class mad a Yoda out of dominoes. We were uncertain that it would turn out but it did work. So now we are happy. Ilya

On Tuesday, Lulu and Isabel and, of course, me Sunita played dogs and lions. Then it started raining, we had to go inside for wet day timetable. We had a look around the room then Rod called us in for a meeting. We pretended it was an animal meeting. Then we went back to our classroom. We decided to play with straws and connectors. I was a baby lion and Isabel was a sausage dog and Lulu was a whippet. We made a kennel, a dog and lion’s kennel. It had cushions inside of it, it looked like this. Sunita

Dice and Frogs

This week we learnt about dice and probability in our maths lessons. First we did a bit of an experiment. We rolled two dice and added the numbers they showed. We each did this a hundred times and coloured in the answers on a special chart. Next we made a graph showing which numbers came up most often. We found that seven was the most popular. This was because when you roll a pair of dice there are six different ways you can roll to make 7.

Today we played frog hops. We used what we had learned about dice totals to predict which frog would win. Most of us thought that frog number 7 would probably win. We thought that 8 and 6 would also be quite likely to win. When we played we found that frog number 7 won most often but other frogs could win too. Max H and Max R had so much fun they kept rolling and colouring and their graphs started looking more and more like a pyramid shape. We had lots of fun and we learnt heaps:

I learnt that there are lots of ways to make 7 with two dice. Felix

I learnt that there are also lots of ways to make 8. Nina

I learnt that 2 and 12 had less ways they could be made. Isabel

I learnt that sometimes a number you don't expect wins the race. Gareth

I learnt that you can play fun games with dice and paper. Ilya

I learnt that little numbers and big numbers are less likely to win. Sunita

I learnt that numbers in the middle are more likely to win. Clarrie

I learnt the more you play, the more your colouring looks like a pyramid. Romola

I learnt that 7 is the best number because it has more ways to make it. Teagan

I learnt that 6 can also win in a number race because there still lots of different ways to make 6. Lulu

At the start of this activity we predicted what number would win our race. Sam

It was hard at first but I got used to it. Aidan

I learnt the more you rolled, the more it looked like the pyramid. Max H

I learnt that 4+6 equals 10. Daniel

I learnt that 5+6 equals 11. Ella G

I learnt that not just seven was likely to win, 6 or 8 might win too. Mia

I learnt that when you graph how many people rolled each number it looks like a pyramid. Lucy

The First Day of Winter

This morning we all woke up in a cold mood because it was the first day of winter! When we went outside it was freezing cold and there was frost on the grass and the cars. Some of us had to pour warm water on our windscreens before we came to school.

When we got to school we played with the frost on the north oval, it was icy and it gave us goosebumps. And when we got into the classroom there was a letter on the whiteboard. It was from Wally, the Winter Woolly Fairy! He had put little woolly jumpers on all the containers in our classroom, to keep them warm all winter.

We wrote a brainstorm about winter and we drew lovely pictures of Wally in our Writer's Notebooks. After recess we made snowflakes out of paper to decorate our classroom window.

As Wally wrote,

"Wishing you a wonderful, warm, woolly winter!"
