Actually, how long is a piece of wool?
We've been looking at measurement here in 1/2LK and this week we practiced measuring using different lengths of wool. Each of us got a piece of wool and we used a ruler to measure it. We learnt some important things about how to use a ruler.
* Rulers have generally have millimeters (mm) and centimeters (cm) marked on them. There are 10mm in one cm.
* Classroom rulers are usually 30cms, sometimes 40cms long.
* Not all rulers look the same, some have lines for every millimeter, some just have cm and half cm marks.
* You need to start measuring from the zero end of the ruler.
* You actually need to start measuring from the zero line, not the corner of the ruler.
* The piece of wool needs to be straight to be measured accurately.
We measured our own lengths of wool and then swapped and measured each others lengths of wool too. Not everyone's wool could be measured in whole cms, some pieces needed half cms (or mmsO too. At the end we put all our wool onto a graph (we LOVE graphs!) and looked at the differences in our pieces of wool. Aidan had the shortest piece of wool (7cm) and Elliot had the longest (32cm).
